The profits belonging to The Gullies Arts Residency are largely for the purpose of maintaining the Studio at The Gullies so it can be used by local artists of the Rangitikei region, pro bono, in order to elevate the awareness and calibre of arts in our local communities. Any remaining profits within that 40% are ring-fenced as belonging to the

Conditions of Entry

  1. Applicants must be New Zealand citizens or permanent residents of New Zealand at the time of entry.

  2. Artists will be expected to conclude their residency with a visual presentation at a venue selected by The Gullies, which may include The Gullies farm.

  3. Artists will be required to interrelate with interested public and supporters through a short programme of activities such as an open day, master class, workshop or lecture and a formal tree planting ceremony on site.

  4. Artists will be required to produce a post-residency report.

  5. Artists will be required to produce a limited edition artwork during the course of the residency. Details including medium, sale price, production details and timing will be decided in discussion with the Artist and representatives of the Residency. The cost of the edition is to be borne by The Gullies. The AP will remain the property of the Artist (whereby 100% of its sale will be retained by the artist). The purpose of the limited edition is to create an archive of work created by recipients of the residency (The Gullies Limited commits to purchasing at least one edition per residency) and a revenue stream to support the programme.

  6. The selection of artists is made by a panel of 3-5 selectors from a cross section of academics, curators and a representative of The Gullies Limited. The selectors will vary annually. Selectors will have the choice of being publicly involved with the process or remain anonymous. There is no pressure either way as their time and expertise are given in kind.

  7. Selection will be based on the calibre of the artist’s work and the panel’s belief that this award will help the artist to another level in their career, as well as encourage and ignite further curiosity in the arts throughout the Rangitīkei region. The sex, gender, orientation, race, age and geographic location of the artist are irrelevant.

  8. The selection panel will have the discretion to select one or more artists for future residencies from one call for applications.

  9. The selection panel’s decision will be final and no correspondence will be entered into. Applications are to arrive no later than 11:59pm on the due date – Thursday, February 1st, 2024. Please submit your application digitally to: hello@thegullies.nz. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at this email address as well.

  10. Successful applicants will be notified Monday, 26th February, 2024.
